Ga Mantse Goes To Court

King Tackie Tawiah has marched to court, demanding that action be taken against key players in the recent installation of another Ga Mantse, in contravention of a court order opposing such action. The legal procedure regarding the service of the contempt suit was drama-filled when bearers of the document were unable to get the police to receive their copy. According to Nii Abbey, Public Relations Officer (PRO) to King Tackie Tawiah, When we got to the Greater Accra Regional Police Command on Friday, a constable we met told us that his big men had closed and so he could not receive the document. We turned to the Police Headquarters information room where we met a similar stone-wall. A policeman there told us that the document was voluminous and so he could not take it. Eventually, DCOP Rose Bio Atenga sent word that she was out of town. The bottom-line is that the police did not receive the document. The contempt case will be moved on Wednesday 6th July 2011 against George Tackie aka Nii Tackie Adama Latse II, pretender Ga Mantse, Yaya Addy, Emmanuel Tackie-Yaoboi aka Nii Yaotey Oto-Ga, Nii Amarkai, Asere Dzasetse, Thomas Okai, Pretender Gbese Mantse, Numo Ogbamey and David Tackie Commey. King Tackie Tawiah III is seeking the court to convict the respondents as aforementioned for contempt of the Judicial Committee of the Greater Accra House of Chiefs and sentence them accordingly. Counsel for the plaintiff is Hon. J. Ayikoi Otoo. In his sworn affidavit dated 24th June 2011, the plaintiff states inter alia that the respondents purported action of installing a new Ga Mantse is intended to prevent the Judicial Committee of the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs from inquiring into a case before it regarding the issue of King Tackie Tawiah III. Following the case before it, the Judicial Committee of the Greater Accra House of Chiefs held, among others, that we hold that Nii Tackie Tawiah III cannot be restrained from carrying himself out as Chief. Cannot be prevented/restrained from performing Customary Rites that go with his office as Ga Mantse. We are also unable to restrain the Ga Traditional Council from inducting him into that Council as a member. Equity, it is said, aids the vigilant, not the indolent. A party seeking to come to equity must have his Eyes wide open, Ears alert and even a sharp nose. Application for interlocutory Injunction dismissed. A few weeks ago, Accra woke up to the disturbing story about the burgling of the Ga Stool House, followed by the purported installation of a new Ga Mantse and a seizure of the Ga Mantse Palace at North Kaneshie. The aforementioned developments were greeted by expression of worry about why the police did not step in to restrain the activities of the kingmakers. The police explained that they could not be embroiled in a chieftaincy issue, amidst rumours that the national security apparatus was knee-deep in the unfolding drama.
