NHIA sacks Officers For Fraud

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has announced the dismissal of thirty three (33) officers who served the authority at the Scheme level after they were found guilty of fraudulent financial activities. The Chief Executive Officer of the Authority, Mr. Sylvester Mensah disclosed this at the end of a 2-day stakeholders forum held in Accra. The forum comes at a time when the 2010 Independent Assessment Review Report of the Health Sector acknowledged the improved transparency in the administration of the NHIS. According to Mr. Sylvester Mensah, the authority has put in place measures to enhance financial efficiency and reduce leakages at all levels of the health insurance program. Mr. Sylvester Mensah added that they have engaged the services of auditors, and external audit consultants who help provide on-the-spot audit reports to the Authority which he says has yielded some good reports so far. Meanwhile, Managers of the National Health Insurance Scheme in the Northern Region have jumped to the defense of the Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Sylvester Mensah over recent Media reports that his administration was in the process of reducing workers salaries to sustain the Scheme. In a press statement, they described the media reports as unfortunate and unjustifiable. According to them it is an unnecessary attempt made by a cross section of the workers union leadership, to tarnish the image of Mr. Sylvester Mensah.
