The Community Magistrate Court 2 presided over by Mr Ali Baba has sentenced eleven street hawkers to three months in jail for selling on the streets contrary to the Accra Metropolitan Assembly�s bye-laws. The eleven persons were arrested by the Police in collaboration with an AMA task force on Monday July 18, near the Graphic and Beyeeman Intersections in Accra while selling tubers of yam and onions on the street side. The eleven have also been fined one hundred and twenty Ghana Cedis (GHC120) each after they pleaded guilty to the charge of selling of merchandise on the street. Confirming the story to Citi News, Yaw Twumasi Ankrah, Chief Prosecutor for the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, said three of the accused pleaded not guilty while eight accepted the charges and pleaded guilty. Mr Twumasi Ankrah said all the eleven hawkers were charged on four counts namely, conspiracy to commit a crime, sale of merchandise on the streets contrary to AMA bye-laws, assault and battery and causing unlawful harm. The judge also remanded them to reappear after they entered not guilty pleas in three other charges.
