ALEX AMOANING, a 46-year-old man resident at an Obuasi suburb of Kwabrakwa in the Ashanti Region, was last Thursday arrested and put into police custody for pretending to be a Ghana Armed Forces recruiter.
The suspect, who claimed to be a retired Warrant Officer Class Two of the Army, was seen defrauding some residents of the Golden city of hundreds of Ghana cedis in fees, an elaborate scheme that police said included the suspect creating an impression of having an office at the Obuasi Divisional Police Headquarters.
Affectionately called WO Quaye, the �military recruiter� had in his possession Ghana Armed Forces� Initial Data Form and a brown envelope containing photocopies of certificates of his victims, the Divisional Police Commander, Chief Supt. Emmanuel Amissah who confirmed the story, told DAILY GUIDE.
He mentioned Nana Kwabena Ntisen Ababio, Edward Erskine and Onassis Addo Kwarteng as some of the people who had fallen victim to the fraudulent activities of the 46-year-old.
Chief Supt. Amissah said Amoaning used a Hyundai Tico cab with registration number WR 2233 Q to front for his activities, while he made friends with some police officers, as part of his fake military enlistment drive.
The commander disclosed that the police also arrested two other persons- Alex Kofi Owusu Ansah and Haruna Bafana- who are suspected to be Amoaning�s accomplices.
The police boss explained that the men were in the company of the suspect at the time of his arrest in Obuasi and added that the three were being investigated to determine how many people had been defrauded.
The police believe the man also operated in other communities outside the division and would therefore extend their investigations to other areas.
