Reduction Of School Fees: University Authorities Turn Down Request

The authorities of the University of Ghana have turned down a request by their students for a reduction in school fees for the next academic year. The university has decided to maintain the same fee schedule released earlier. It however advised the students to make good use of an earlier announced 50 percent concession which allows students to pay half of the fees for the first semester and defray the balance in the second semester. Student leaders who appeared before the executive committee last week explained why they want some charges removed from the fee schedule. But their proposal was rejected by the university authorities. Speaking to Citi news, the acting SRC President of the university, Irene Sitsofe Attipoe who had earlier expressed hope of a possible reduction in the fees expressed disappointment at the latest development. They sounded positive when they asked me to present my case to them but I just want to hope that appearances arent deceptive and that I would not be deceived about their posture in the meeting, lets just hope for the best. She said. Members of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) with support from the Graduate Students Association of Ghana recently hit the streets of Accra to demonstrate over what they described as exorbitant academic fees.
