National Security Operative Remanded

An operative of the National Security, WOII Kofi Nixon Tetteh (rtd), has been arrested by the Odumase-Krobo police for shooting a 40-year-old farmer at Ogome, near Somanya in the Yilo Krobo district of the Eastern region, over a stool land. He was sent to the Odumase-Krobo Circuit Court on Thursday, a day after his arrest and remanded into prison custody to re-appear before the court on August 23. The victim, Philip Borley, was returning from his farm when Kofi Nixon shot him twice in his right thigh without any provocation. This was after he had stormed the said stool land at Ogome and started shooting indiscriminately in a bid to drive away some youth who had gone there to protect the land. Borley was rushed to the Atua Government Hospital and later referred to the regional hospital at Koforidua because of the seriousness of his condition. According to the victim, he was returning from his farm on Wednesday afternoon when he saw WOII Nixon Tetteh carrying two guns. He said without provocation, Tetteh shot him. Hectares of land belonging to the Ogome stool are said to have been illegally sold to some influential people by some NDC functionaries in the district at the time Ogome did not have any chief. After a new chief, Nene Ako Sackey II was installed about two years ago, he ordered that all illegal occupants on the Ogome land should vacate or come and see him for the proper procedure to regularise their stay on the land. Daily Guide sources said the youth of Ogome, who were fully behind their chief, resolved to help the chief retrieve their lands for them. The youth of the town were said to have voluntarily dedicated themselves to protecting the land from further illegal sales and encroachment. A former Yilo Krobo constituency chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) who allegedly led the illegal sale of the Ogome land to his cronies, decided to confront the youth and drive them away from the land. This led to a stand-off and WOII Nixon Tetteh, who comes from the same area, was called to come and drive the youth away from the land. WOII Tetteh stormed the land with two guns and started shooting indiscriminately, forcing the youth to run for their lives. In the course of the shooting, Borley, who was then returning from his farm, oblivious of what was happening, got shot by WOII Tetteh, a National Security man and a known NDC activist in the area. He was rushed to Atua hospital and later transferred to the regional hospital. A report was made to the Odumase-Krobo Police and WOII Tetteh was consequently arrested and processed for court for attempted murder and causing harm.
