Three officials of the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFAC) have died after the vehicle on which they travelling skidded off the road, somersaulted several times and landed in a local river at Pagaaza, near Tamale in the Northern Region.
The retrieved bodies of three have been taken to Accra to be presented to their respective families.
Earlier, Daily Guide gathered that the bodies of John Armah 32, Bright Kofi Nayrko, 28 and Mark Andre Ampiah could not be retrieved from the river as it was reported to have overflowed its banks.
Traditional rulers of the area had to perform some rituals before the bodies could be retrieved from the river two days after the unfortunate incident. The three officials of GIFAC were attached to the Prison Service to facilitate the training of personnel and inmates on Information, Communication and Technology (ICT).
They were therefore reported to have embarked on a regional tour to undertake feasibility studies on the installation of ICT equipment at the various prisons in the country.
After their assigned duties in Tamale, the deceased persons rushed to Yendi but on their return, they met their untimely death in the fatal accident at Pagaaza, 18 kilometers to the Tamale metropolis.
According to some eyewitnesses, the driver of the ash-coloured Toyota Hilux with registration number GS 993-10 lost control so the car hit the guardrails by the roadside before falling into the river, after somersaulting severally.
Attempts by personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service, with support from residents of the community, to retrieve the drowned bodies proved futile.
They were able to pull out the wrecked car that was towed to the banks of the river.
The inhabitants however told the personnel that the bodies could be retrieved after the pacification of the river gods.
After days of search, the three bodies were finally retrieved and handed over to the police who transported them to Tamale before they were taken to Accra on Monday morning.
Chief Inspector Ebenezer Tetteh, Northern Regional Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), confirmed the incident to Daily Guide and appealed to road users to be cautious when it rained.
