Govt: STX Deal To Be Abrogated If

Government has given the strongest indication yet that the controversial STX housing project could be abrogated if the Ghanaian and Korean partners do not patch up their differences within the shortest possible time. At separate meetings on Tuesday, the feuding partners were advised to withdraw the various letters dismissing each other so as to make way for the Ghana Housing Project to start. Failure to amicably resolve the impasse could see the entire deal fall through, an option not suited to anyones purpose. The meetings, convened at the instance of the chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Works and Housing David Assuming, were also attended by officials of the Ministry of Water Resources, Works and Housing. Moments after the meeting with the Korean and Ghanaian partners of STX Engineering and Construction, Hon. David Assuming told Citi News that all sides were to committed to the resolution of the differences apparently holding the project back. Since we want to resolve the issue amicably the understanding was that we want to cease fire and revert to the original status for us to make progress. So the letters upon letters that came out is something that would be addressed by both partners whereby we would see withdrawal of some of these letters for us to make progress. Hon. David Assuming however conceded that if care is not taken and the partners in the STX deal are allowed to go their separate ways there would be no other option than to abrogate the deal. Several members of the opposition NPP have called for the immediate abrogation of the STX deal, describing it as fraudulent. On Monday August 22, the NDC Member of Parliament of Adenta, Kojo Adu Asare broke ranks with members of his party and called for the abrogation of the STX contract, saying an early withdrawal and review of the agreement would save the government further embarrassment in the future. B K Asamoah, the Ghanaian Chief of STX Engineering and Construction Ghana Ltd. on Tuesday August 18, 2011 rubbished news reports that he had been fired by the board of the company contracted by the Mills administration to build 30,000 modern housing units for Ghanas security agencies. Reports say an unsigned notice was pasted at the Airport Residential Area office of STX Engineering and Construction Ghana, claiming the Ghanaian head of STX Ghana had been relieved of his duties. Mr Asamoah had earlier made moves to dismiss the Korean members on the board of STX Ghana.
