Marijuana Use Among Minors On The Increase

Dr Francis Osei, Adansi South Director of Health Services, has called for stringent measures to tackle the growing marijuana use among school children in the area. He said the rate at which pupils at the basic level of education including girls were getting hooked to the narcotic drug was disturbing and should not be allowed to continue. The Edubiase Government Hospital, he said, is now attending to more psychiatric cases but he did not provide figures. Dr Osei was speaking at a mid-year performance review meeting of the Health Directorate at New Edubiase. In attendance were health professionals, heads of department, chiefs, assembly members and other stakeholders. He said there was the need for all to act together to help roll back malaria, the most common disease reported at the Out-Patients Department (OPD). Dr osei praised health workers in the area for their hard work, commitment and professionalism, which he said had led to significant improvement in quality health care delivery. He said this notwithstanding, there were a number of constraints and mentioned among these as inadequate staff, lack of transportation and accommodation as well as the poor nature of roads in the area. These needed to be addressed to further enhance the quality of care. Touching on the way forward, he said, the Directorate would strengthen community involvement in disease control and prevention.
