Two out of four fraud syndicates have been arrested for duping renters thousands of dollars under the pretext of securing them accommodation at East Legon and Tema respectively. The arrested persons are Edward Kojo Addo, 36, and Samuel Nii Nortey, 38, while Madam Theresa a.k.a Hajia and one Charles, an agent, are at large. A video footage taken by the wife of one of the victims when tenancy documents were being signed aided in the suspects arrest. Narrating the incident to Daily Guide, DCOP Rose Bio Atinga, the Accra Regional Police Commander, said the suspects advertised, in one of the Accra daily newspapers, that their four-bedroom mansion at Airport Residential Area was available for rent. The said advertisement, which was carried thrice in the papers, indicated the telephone numbers and other contact details of the suspects. The victim, who showed interest in the house, called the agent, suspect Charles, on august 20, 2011. Suspect Charles then took the victim to the said house, which he claimed belonged to suspect Madam Teresa but Samuel Nii Nortey acted as a caretaker. Madam Theresa, the supposed owner of the mansion, offered the residence to the victim at $1,500 per month, meaning $ 18,000 a year. The victim and his wife, also a foreigner, paid an amount of $18,000 to the suspects on August 26, 2011. Unknown to the suspects, the whole transaction was videoed by the wife of the victim, who also stood as a witness for the husband. After signing the fake tenancy form, the suspects handed over the key to the supposed building but the victim was later denied access to the building by the real owner. When the victim tried the phone numbers of the suspects, they could not be reached as their phones were off. A complaint was lodged at the Airport Police and the video given to the security personnel to aid in their investigations. In the course of the investigations, another lady victim also reported at the station that she had been duped to the tune of GH7, 400 by four men with the same mode of operation. The second victim was able to identify the suspects as the people who collected her money when the video was played to her. DCOP Rose Bio Atinga said the two would be arraigned before court soon while police continued to fish for Madam Teresa.
