Ashaiman Gas Explosion Site To Be Converted Into Car Park

The executive committee of the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly (ASHMA) has recommended that the area where the gas explosion took place a couple of weeks ago and claimed a number of lives, should be converted into a commercial lorry park to generate revenue for the Assembly. The idea is also to ensure that the incident does not occur there again. The committee further recommended that school feeding caterers be sensitised on the use of gas in their activities, as well as the need for the provision of fire extinguishers at their operating areas. The committee, again, recommended that all market women in the Municipality be encouraged to insure their wares and properties. These were contained in the executive committees report to the Assemblys general assembly meeting, which was held at its premises last Wednesday. The executive committee also expressed grave concern over the delay in the construction of a court complex in the Ashaiman Middle East area. According to the committee report, the Assembly would pursue funding from all sources, including the Administrator of Stool Lands, when the architectural drawings are released by the Judicial Service. The committee tasked the Chairman of the Justice and Security sub-committee of the Assembly, Alhaji Salisu Yaro, to verify the source of funding for the project from the Judicial Service. Other issues the executive committee made recommendations on include a neighborhood watch committee, revenue mobilisation strategy, fire hydrants, security, increase in the number of street children in the municipality, recreational center at the Ashaiman dam site, and encroachment of agricultural lands. The rest are construction of a kraal, government block farming/fertiliser subsidy, boundaries of the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly, ceded revenue to zonal councils, compensation to SUCARDIF, SDI slum upgrading, towing of vehicles and septic emptier, noise pollution, burning of tires, land acquisition, and budget review. On the encroachment of agricultural lands in the Municipality, the committee condemned the sale of such lands to people for the construction of residential accommodation, saying it would have an adverse effect on farmers in the area. It recommended that the Assembly should ensure that no one is permitted to encroach on lands in the area anymore, and called on the divisional council members to desist from the sale of such lands in the area.
