Fire Guts Darkuman 'Kokompe'

A four year old girl was on Friday evening burnt to death by a devastating fire that swept through the Darkuman Kokompe market destroying property worth thousands of Ghana cedis. The young girl who was asleep at the time of the fire was completely burnt beyond recognition. Eyewitnesses say her father had left the sleeping child to go get food and only returned to see his daughters charred body. Between 40 to 50 spare parts stalls at the Darkuman Kokompe were all razed down by the fire. According to eyewitnesses, the fire started after a worker of one of the spare parts stalls decided to burn rubbish behind a wooden structure after work, unfortunately the wooden structure caught fire which immediately spread to other shops eventually destroying the popular spare part market. About five houses and a Church situated in the area were also destroyed by the fire. An eyewitness who gave his name as Reggie told Citi News that the spare parts dealers have been warned on several occasions not to burn refuse close to the market but the advice has fallen on deaf ears. Personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service only managed to put out the fire that started around 7pm after more fifteen water tankers had arrived at the scene. According to Reggie, residents of the area tried frantically to salvage some property but all efforts failed as they could not go near the blazing fire.
