Traders Rush To Catch A Glimpse Of Mrs Rawlings

FORMER FIRST Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings might have lost her bid to become the flagbearer of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2012 elections, but she still commands massive support of party following in the Northern region. Activities in Tamale came to a standstill on Saturday afternoon when Nana Konadu and her entourage hit town to thank party supporters and sympathizers for their support in the run up to the partys delegates congress in Sunyani. The former first lady had made similar visits to the Upper East and West regions before making her way to Tamale. Over 15 busload of NDC youth clad in her T-shirts and led by four horsemen ushered in the President of the 31st December Womens Movement (DWM) to the town. On reaching the Tamale township, business activities came to a halt, with traders rushing to the streets to catch a glimpse of the former first lady. This resulted in a traffic jam as vehicles had to park in order to pave way for the charged NDC supporters who were heard chanting, No Konadu no vote. At the palace of the Gulkpegu regent, which was the first port of call of the team, some young men literally engaged in fisticuffs in order to gain entry into the main yard. She took the opportunity to pay courtesy calls on 6 traditional rulers within the Tamale Metropolis, thanking them for the advice and support they extended to her during her campaign to lead the NDC. Addressing teeming party supporters later at the GNAT Hall, Nana Konadu accused officials of the current government of peddling all manner of falsehoods about her and NDC founder, Jerry John Rawlings. According to her, it was obvious the loud-mouthed persons in government had gone on a lying spree in order to discredit the former first couple in the eyes of the citizenry, citing the purported $5million gift for the revamping of the Nsawam cannery as an example. She indicated that no such money was ever received by them and appealed to all well-meaning Ghanaians not to be defaced by such a falsehood, remarking, So if anybody comes to tell you that I am collecting from government, it is not true. Nana Konadu accused the late entrants into the NDC as those making all sort of baseless claims to ruin her reputation but assured them they would fail. She urged party supporters to remain firm and resolute and not allow the few ones benefitting from the Better Ghana Agenda to dampen their spirits in the NDC, indicating that the party belonged to all of them. Spokesperson for the Rawlingses, Kofi Adams, bemoaned the infiltration of the partys ranks by aliens, noting that their actions were gradually grinding the party to a halt. According to him, the party was not against new converts but such persons were required to follow the laid-down rules and regulations, observing that lately, such channels had been flawed. He cited the case of Kojo Boakye Djan, describing him as a mole in the party who should not be endorsed in view of his opposition to the NDC founder. Those who think that they want to dismember NDC by their actions, we must watch out and take them out. We will have the opportunity to clean and do what is right, he warned. Several youth chiefs who, in recent times, have championed a series of demonstrations against Northern regional executives of the NDC, on hearing that Nana Konadu was addressing supporters at the GNAT Hall, stormed there to lend their support to her.
