Police Arrest Beggars

The Anti-Human Trafficking Unit (AHTU) of the Eastern Regional Police Command has arrested nine beggars on the streets of Koforidua, capital of the Eastern Region, for harassing commuters. The suspects are Mohammed Alhuseini, 31, a father of two children, and six others, who the police suspect come from Mali and Niger. Speaking to The Chronicle, the Eastern Regional Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Kwabena Gyamera-Yeboah, said he instructed his men to arrest the beggars upon persistent report from commuters, and investigations into their activities. The regional police boss said the suspects were currently in detention for engaging their children in exploitative labour, and depriving them of education, which is contrary to section 87 of the Children�s Act of 1998. A sum of GH�402 was found on them during the arrest. At the time of filing this report, the police had released the children to the Koforidua Zongo Chief, Ali Haruna Kurmi, who was alleged to be housing the suspects since their arrival in Koforidua.
