Mills Cancels Commonwealth Trip To Attend To Doctors Strike

The President of Ghana Professor John Evans Atta Mills has called off his trip to the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Australia due to the ongoing strike by public sector doctors. According to the care-taker Minister of Health, Haruna Iddrisu, the president has designated the Vice President John Mahama to go and represent him in the city of Perth from October 28-30 this year. The president cannot leave while his back is burning [so he has ordered the vice president to go and represent him at the Commonwealth Meeting], that is a mark of a sensitive president, Hon. Iddrisu disclosed on Joy fm. The members of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) have been off the wards for over two weeks now, an action which has threatened several lives and piling a lot of pressure on the 37 Military and Police Hospitals. It is, however, not clear whether the president will be meeting personally with the doctors in the coming days to intervene following his aborted trip. Meanwhile, the doctors will be meeting with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission and National Labour Commission on Monday for a compulsory arbitration.
