Newly appointed Berekum Chelsea coach, Hans Van der Plyum has labelled the Ghana Football Association (GFA) as �racists� after being snubbed for the coaching role of the national U-20 team.
Van der Plyum applied for the Black Satellites position but lost out to his former deputy at Heart of Lions, Orlando Wellington, who was given the nod to be assisted by ex-Black Stars captain, Charles Akunnor.
The Dutchman told GNA Sports that he was, however, the least disappointed with the setback in his quest to realize his long-cherished dream of handling the national youth team since he suspected the authorities 'had their choices in mind.' �I applied for the U-20 position but I�m not disappointed because I did not get it. They (GFA) had their choices.�
Van der Plyum, who has been a coach in Ghana for more than a decade, 'said he was reliably informed by an official of the hierarchy that foreigners were not their favourites. �I was informed by a top official that they were not going to give the job to a foreigner. I was therefore not surprised when they gave it to Orlando.�
The Dutchman explained that he qualifies for Ghanaian citizenship by marriage and was surprised at his being tagged a foreigner. �I am a Ghanaian but most people don�t know�,� said coach Van der Plyum who is married to a Ghanaian.
The veteran trainer expressed no bitterness about the re-appointment of Wellington, despite the latter performing miserably on his initial stint. �I believe in Orlando that he can deliver. However, he must select the right players. He should go for players with the mental toughness and he will make it this time round.�
Coach Van der Plyum was on Tuesday confirmed head coach of Premier League champions, Berekum Chelsea replacing Steve Polack who was fired last Sunday after a lone goal loss to Medeama SC.He has had stints with Kpando Hearts of Lions, Obausi Ashantigold and Gomoa Fetteh Feyenoord in the past.
