Sly Death Triggers Heart Disease Talk

The sudden departure of soccer administrator Alhaji Sly Tetteh to eternity has stirred some members of the medical as well as football fraternity to hold a lecture on heart-related diseases. The lecture, arranged by the Retired National Football Association of Ghana (RENFAG) drew most of the retired players to the Media Centre of the Accra Stadium last Saturday. It was Dr Alfred Lutterodt of the Ghana-Canada Medical Centre (Specialty Hospital) who took participants through the close to three-hour session. He admonished the participants to do regular medical check-ups as well as exercise but with caution. Responding to the steps one has to take to prevent heart failures, he mentioned regular exercise, stress control, no smoking, good dieting, cholesterol check and anger control among others. Regular exercise should be done but with caution. If you are exercising and you realize that your heart is beating abnormally, it is advisable you see a medical doctor. We cant conquer heart diseases completely but we can control it by exercising regularly, especially the aerobics, which I consider the best form of exercise, he added. He condemned the practice of drinking alcoholic beverages after exercising which is becoming common with some Keep Fit Clubs and some groups. He told the press mid-way through the lecture that he spoke with the Canadian Chamber of Commerce and some medical practitioners, after the death of Sly Tetteh to intensify the education on heart diseases. Dr Lutterodt revealed that heart diseases are becoming common worldwide due poor lifestyles. The Public Relations Officer of RENFAG Willie Klutse noted that the lecture was purposed to educate members of the group to live healthy lifestyles. We are doing this among other things to ensure that our mates will meet their heath needs. So far we have registered 70 persons under the National Health Care Scheme. A lot of them are confronted with health challenges, hence this initiative, he added.
