NDC Scolds Catholic Bishops ...

The ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) has taken a swipe at the Catholic Bishops Conference over the latters stance in the raging debate over the biometric verification system. According to the party, unless the current security challenges that affect the countrys elections are addressed, biometric verification will not serve any purpose in the electoral process. Addressing the press in Accra on Tuesday, NDC General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu-Nketia stated that much as the party is not against a credible electoral process for the country, it believes the time is not ripe for biometric verification. Mr. Asiedu-Nketia questioned the Catholic Bishops consistency in calling for biometric verification on one hand while rejecting the Computerised School Selection Placement System on the other. We can meet the Catholic Bishops Conference anywhere, any day; we can meet any civil society organisation anywhere any day and indeed we have met NPP at IPAC and they could not stand the power of our argument, he said. It was amusing to listen to the contradictions in the communiqu in the Catholic Bishops Conference. Whiles in the electoral system you are advocating for application for new technology, then in the computer selection system you are also advocating for us going back for the manual. Do they want a situation where we would go into the next elections, mess it up for them to hold another Bishops Conference calling on the government to revert to the manual verification, is that what they want to tell us? Asiedu-Nketia asked. The NDC scribe added: In the past eight years, mention one single improvement that was introduced in our electoral system from 2001 to 2008 when the apostles of verification were in power. Mr. Asiedu-Nketia stated that the NDC is not worried about the seeming lone path it has embarked on in rejecting the biometric verification system.
