No Mercy For Hotheads Ahead Of 2012 Elections

A legal consultant to the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) Gabriel Pwamang has said political parties of Ghana that fail to comply with the 2012 Political Parties Code of Conduct will face strict sanctions. Mr. Pwamang said the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) and a committee set up by the various political parties assisted by the IEA have been mandated to keep political parties in check. He told Citi News political parties ought to adhere to the reviewed code of conduct to help sustain the democracy enjoyed by the nation. He indicated that the NCCE has been mandated under the provision to make a determination that the conduct of a particular political party, a particular politician or a candidate, if the language that the party uses, violates the terms of the code, there would be a publication to condemn that conduct. So if the population is being told that you are conducting yourself to what you yourself voluntarily agreed then people are likely not to trust you and to vote for you, Mr. Pwamang added. If the conduct was in breach of the code, but then it offends another party or another candidate, that candidate can actually make a complaint to a committee which has been set up by the party. They would investigate the matter and all that would be publicised, which would ensure that the purpose for which the elections are being held results in a true democracy.
