A police officer stationed at the Nkawkaw Divisional Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU), last Tuesday December 13, 2011, added stone throwing to his professional ethic when he allegedly threw a stone at the windscreen of a Yutong bus packed with passengers, destroying it completely. Lance Corporal Nana Antwi, who most drivers of Nkawkaw have accused of alleged harassment and extortion, did not understand why the driver of the Kumasi bound bus with registration number GC 481 AX, should disobey his orders and the best way to teach him (driver) a lesson was to smash his windscreen with a stone. Even though L/CPL Antwi took to his heels after destroying the windscreen he has reportedly told his bosses that his action was as a result of the driver�s attempt to knock him down. Eye witness accounts however contradict this. According to the driver�s account which was corroborated by an eye witness, due to the constant traffic jam at Nkawkaw, most drivers usually divert and use the Nkawkaw Zongo road and join the main Accra-Kumasi road at the Zongo Junction or Opportunity Bank. According to the driver, when he used the Zongo road and wanted to join the main road, the Police Officer prevented him and ordered that he should rather use the road leading to Kwahu Atibie on the Kwahu Mountain. �I pleaded with him that I didn�t know the way to follow to the main road again so he should allow me to join the road from where he stopped me but he didn�t understand and insisted that I should use the unknown road,� the driver explained. The driver said, L/Cpl. Antwi stood in front of the vehicle for several minutes preventing him from moving. This attracted a number of onlookers, and passengers on board who pleaded with the policeman to understand the driver but he didn�t agree and when the driver wanted to move, the Police officer surprisingly went for a stone and hit the windscreen, destroying it completely. After his distasteful act, he bolted and made a complaint that the driver wanted to knock him down. When the Nkawkaw Divisional Police MTTU commander, DSP Alex Delatsa, was contacted, he confirmed the story and said, around 5:30 p.m on that day in question the Lance corporal who was directing traffic at a point called harbour base rushed to the station and made a complaint that, he had been knocked down by a driver of a Yutong bus he ordered to stop. A medical form was therefore issued to him to attend hospital which he did. The driver of the bus too went to the Nkawkaw Central Police Station to lodge a complaint against the Police Officer that, he had smashed his vehicle�s windscreen with a stone. The commander said, since the driver was carrying passengers, he was allowed to continue his journey to Kumasi and returned the next day. He promised that the Police would conduct impartial investigations to know who was telling the truth to enable them take appropriate action. At the time of filing this story the driver was yet to report back from Kumasi.
