Mills Orders EOCO To Probe Woyome Payment

The President of Ghana, John Evans Atta Mills has directed the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) to investigate the circumstances surrounding the payment of Forty Two Million Ghana Cedis (GH42 million) to Vamed/Waterville Engineering and Mr. Alfred Woyome as judgement debt. A statement issued by Head of Communications at the Presidency, Koku Anyidoho, stated that the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) is also to find out the total amount of monies paid out as judgment debts since the present administration took over the reins of government on 7th of January, 2009 and who the beneficiaries are. The opposition NPP today urged the president to probe the case since the manner in which Woyome was awarded the judgment debt smacks of corruption and that amounts to financial loss to the state. The minority described the amount as the single largest loss to Ghana since independence. The NPP also called on President John Evans Atta-Mills to relieve Betty Mould-Iddrisu, the former Attorney General and Minister for Justice, of her current ministerial post as education minister for being negligent, reckless and unprofessional in the case. Mr. Woyome has spent time in the last few days justifying his right to the judgment debt received in 2010 for what he has widely described as the illegal termination of a contract awarded him to renovate some stadia towards Ghanas hosting of the 2008 African Cup of Nations.
