The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) believes that, the primary responsibility of every government is to administer to the needs of their constituents inter alia shelter, food, and security and not to add to their challenges. The recent increase in the prices of petrol in Ghana on December, 29, 2011 is seen as hugely unfortunate by the Union. NUGS believes that, the price change which will see the cost of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) increase by 30 per cent while petrol and diesel will go up 15 per cent at pump will make the living of our people difficult. The effect of the increase will see astronomical rise in car fares, food items, pure water and other things that help in making the lives of our people a little comforting. The Union is not unaware of the bumper harvest commercial vehicle drivers are reaping from this increase. This harvest is being made at the mercy of the innocent passengers. The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) is by this statement; � Calling on the Mills government to consider the plight of the poor Ghanaian masses who will have to pay schools fees early this year for their wards. � Calling on the government again to reduce the twenty per cent (20%) increase to ten per cent (10%) � Calling on the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) of the Trades Union Congress of Ghana to bring their members to order since they are extorting God-knows what fares from innocent passengers. They must help the situation by bringing the fares adjustment for the various locations to the public. � Calling on Ghanaians to help in a concerted effort to prevail on our national leadership to reduce the products NUGS wants to state unequivocally to the public that it is ready to partner any other civil societies in this country to call for a decent reduction of the petrol and this we are committed to doing until the condition of the poor in the country is respected and hugely administered to.
