Kwame Danso Under Curfew

THE BRONG Ahafo Regional Security Council (REGSEC), in consultation with the Interior Ministry, has imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew on the troubled town of Kwame Danso, capital of the Sene District. The curfew, which took effect yesterday (Thursday), starts from 6:00pm to 6:00am daily and everybody was supposed to remain indoors between the stipulated hours until calm was restored. The action was taken following Wednesdays deadly clash between angry youth of the town and the police, in which two civilians were shot dead by a police officer. As at yesterday, when members of the REGSEC visited the town, calm had been restored to the area. There was heavy security presence with 60 police officers and 33 military personnel in the area. Credible reports available to DAILY GUIDE indicated that the police officer at the centre of the incident, Lance Corporal Felix Dankwa, who shot into the crowd, was not dead. According to police sources, he had been sent to the intensive care unit of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, as he was said to be in very critical condition. Daily Guide was told that during the mob action, the youth thought he was dead and left him to his fate, but he later regained consciousness. The two civilians who were shot dead had been identified as Kwame Jacki, 22, and Atta Kwasi, 32. Another young man who sustained gunshot wounds in the stomach, Lassi Francis, was also receiving medical attention at the Atebubu District Hospital. So far, 130 residents had been arrested in connection with the disturbances. Meanwhile, the Brong Ahafo Regional Minister, Kwadwo Nyamekye-Marfo, has advised the youth to exercise restraint and not to take the law into their own hands.
