Free Detained CID Official From BNI Cells - Ursula

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for Ablekuma South, Ursula Owusu, has called for the release of the head of the Commercial Crimes Unit of the Ghana Police CID, DSP Gifty Mawuenyegah. The senior police officer has been in the custody of the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) for almost a week for the alleged role she played in the cocaine-turned-baking soda case. Her lawyer, Oliver Dzeble, on Friday filed a suit at the Human Rights Court in Accra against the Attorney General and the Director General of the BNI for the unlawful detention of his client. Speaking to Citi News, Owusu argued that the BNI has no right to keep DSP Mawuenyegah in custody for that long. Some people are saying that maybe as a superintendent assistant of police, she has been subjecting others to this same treatment, so it serves her right, but I am saying that the law ought to be no respecter of persons and it must be applied dispassionately, the human rights activist stated. Madame Owusu, who is also an Executive Member of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) Ghana, said DSP Mawuenyegah, like anyone else, deserved to be protected in accordance with the constitution. As a woman, she could have special needs, she could be emotionally or physically traumatised and the Lord knows what else is being done to her, she countered.
