EOCO Boss: We Ain't A Fact-finding Unit...Every Criminal Person In Woyome Case Will Be Prosecuted

The Economic and Organised Crimes Office (EOCO) has stated that it is not a fact-finding investigative machinery and that persons found culpable of any crime can and will be prosecuted at the end of the Woyome GhC58 million judgment debt investigations. This notably contradicts comments made by President Evans Atta Mills that EOCO had been directed to bring out the facts of the matter. The executive director of the EOCO, Mr. Mortey Akpadzi, told Joy Fm that should there be any suspicions of foul-play during the course of the investigation, his outfit has the mandate to proceed with prosecution. We are not a fact-finding unit. A fact-finding unit simply investigates who said this and who did that. We are to determine whether those actions were criminal and if the law is broken, the persons involved can be prosecuted, he said. Mr. Akpadzis statements followed accusations made by the legal counsel for a former minister of finance, Yaw Osafo Maafo, under the NPP government that they are on a mission to prosecute his client and other past government officials. Mr. Maafo early on filed a court injunction to immune him from appearing before EOCO after his name popped up in the Woyome saga. His lawyer, Mr. Odame said his client had reservations concerning the manner in which EOCO was conducting the investigation and the wording of the letter inviting Mr. Maafo to appear before the state investigative outfit. What contract are they talking about? Even the Attorney-General in her report admitted that she had made a mistake after the payments had been made to Woyome. So how can they indict my client over a contract that does not exist? he inquired.
