MIDA Commissions School Projects In Tamale

The Millennium Development Authority (MiDA) has commissioned a six-unit and a two-unit kindergarten classroom blocks for the Nuri-Imam Primary School in the Tamale Metropolis. The projects estimated at the cost of US$248, 000 have ancillary facilities such as toilet and urinal, library, staff common rooms, stores, offices and ICT centre. There are several of such ongoing projects spread across various parts of the Northern region under Ghana�s compact of the Millennium Challenge Account (MCA). The Resident Country Director of the MCA, Katerina Ntep, commissioned and handed over the projects to the school authorities at a colorful durbar. She explained that the projects formed part of the MCA�s commitment to help the government of Ghana completely eliminate the schools under trees system �The MCA considers education as an integral part of human transformation and will do everything possible to improve the standard of education in deprived communities,� she added. She said the MCA was also committed to agricultural transformation as part of its integrated approach to poverty reduction in Ghana. �The MCA is supporting rural communities in the areas of job creation through agricultural modernization and expansion of the road sector to reduce poverty in rural communities,� she stated. Ntep commended the government of Ghana and the local authorities for their cooperation and support at all levels of the implementation of MCA projects in the entire northern region. The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of MiDA, Martin Eson-Benjamin encouraged parents to take advantage of the expansion of educational infrastructure and send their children particularly the girl-child to school. He disclosed that MiDA constructed and rehabilitated a total of 76 schools in the northern zone with the Tamale metropolis benefiting from eight. According to him, about 97 farmer-based organizations have so far benefited from the commercial agriculture training package. The packages they received comprised wellington boots, nose masks, seeds and large quantities of fertilizer bags. The MiDA CEO said under the Tamale Water Extension Project, 70km of pipelines have been laid, overhead tanks constructed with booster stations and 49 standpipes to improve water delivery in the Tamale Metro, Tolon/Kumbungu and Savelugu/Nanton districts. Alhaji Abudulai Harunah Friday, the Mayor of Tamale, in a speech read on his behalf showed appreciation for MiDA�s support in diverse ways intended to improve the living conditions of the rural poor.
