A 22-YEAR-OLD Level 300 student of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has been stabbed to death by a taxi driver at Awoshie in Accra.
The deceased, Joseph Kwesi Asare, was alleged to have attempted to kill Samuel Okaine, the cabbie, but was overpowered and stabbed to death by the intended victim.
Samuel Okaine, 27, who also sustained various degrees of multiple knife wounds, is at the Police Hospital receiving treatment.
Narrating the story to Daily Guide, the Crime Officer in charge of the Odorkor District Police Command, DSP Emmanuel Osei indicated that around 1:40pm on Thursday January 12, 2012, Kwesi Asare hired Samuel Okaine�s taxi from Abeka area to his house near Anyah Deeper Life Church area to pick some items to the Circle transport yard.
Upon reaching the house, the deceased opened his main gate and asked the taxi driver to park inside the house. The deceased entered his room and brought out some items, which he packed into the taxi and pleaded with the driver to help him collect the remaining items from his room into the car.
Immediately the driver entered the house, the deceased allegedly closed the door and attempted to stab him with a kitchen knife.
The driver, in the ensuing struggle, took the knife from Joseph and stabbed him in the abdomen. Samuel Okaine later rushed to the Anyah Police station to lodge a complaint.
When police personnel reached the scene, Joseph was lying dead in a pool of blood. The taxi driver, who sustained deep knife wounds on the neck, ears, mouth and hands, and was bathed in blood, was rushed to the Police Hospital for medical attention.
He is currently responding to treatment, according to the police.
Meanwhile, the bizarre circumstance which led to the death of the student has elicited varied speculations, with most residents making remarks that the deceased had wanted to kill the taxi driver for sakawa, the money-making spiritual phenomenon which has become the obsession of many boys in the country recently.
The deceased, according to some residents, was very rich and lived a flamboyant lifestyle in his father�s house together with the sister.
The father, according to residents, is living in the United States of America with the step-mother. When the incident happened, according to some residents, the sister was not at home but the deceased was seen with two ladies in his house on that fateful day.
