26 Grabbed For Possession Of Offensive Weapons

The Volta Regional Police Task Force yesterday arrested 26 people in a dawn swoop at Apesokubi near Worawora in the Biakoye District in the Volta Region for allegedly possessing offensive weapons and gadgets. Weapons retrieved from the suspects, comprising 19 men and seven women, were 13 single-barrelled shotguns, one locally manufactured pistol, 85 live cartridges, 83 empty shells of cartridges, a Milo tin of gunpowder, three machetes, a dagger and an ammunition pouch. Briefing newsmen in Ho yesterday, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) in charge of the Volta Region, Mr Alex Bedie, said the suspects would be screened and those found culpable would be arraigned. He explained that the arrest was a sequel to a shooting incident that occurred at Apesokubi on December 29, last year, during which a head chief of the Akpossou, Nana Alefle Kwabena Kitikpo III, and two others were fired at by unidentified gunmen in the night. The shooting incident led to the death of a cousin of the chief, Nicholas Ane, with the chief and another person sustaining gunshot wounds. During the incident, a Honda saloon car belonging to the chief was burnt to ashes. Mr Bedie said the police proceeded to investigate the incident and take the necessary action to arrest the suspects to curb the violence.
