Over 1,000 Illegal Structures At Nkrumah Circle Demolished

Over a thousand illegal structures along the railway line at Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra have been demolished by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) on Thursday. According to the city authorities, the decision was taken after fire gutted the area on Sunday afternoon and razed down about 50 of the illegal structures. Reports indicate that the fire might have been caused by an electrical fault since the structures are located under electricity pylons. Speaking to Citi News, the Mayor of Accra, Alfred Vanderpuye said the AMA will keep a close eye on the area to prevent the squatters from rebuilding their structures. Hard decisions are not easy to implement but when you have to save national interest it is a necessity, he said. We will monitor and make sure that wont come back, we cant keep wasting resources. The Greater Accra Minister, Nii Armah Ashietey, after the demolition said he will direct NADMO to come to the aid of the affected persons to alleviate their plight.
