Government And Workers To Start Negotiations For 2012 Minimum Wage

At the time of going to press, there were credible indications that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government will this week, start the processing of negotiating for a new minimum wage for 2012 with labour leaders. The source explained: the government understands the concerns of labour that the average increase of 15% in fuel prices has brought some increases in transport fares and food prices. However, the solution does not lie in restoring the subsidies on fuel. Even if we restored the subsidies, the level of prices now will not reduce. Informal conversations with some union leaders who had been in meetings since last week gives the impression that they are in agreement towards negotiations for a new minimum wage. All the dozen or so leaders agreed that a restoration of the fuel subsidies will not necessarily reduce prices. The Daily Dispatch will keep our readers updated on any new development.
