Gang Rape: 5 Students of Benkum SHS Before Court

Five students of the Benkum Senior High School in Larteh Akuapem in the Eastern Region were on Wednesday arraigned before the Akropong Akuapem Circuit Court for allegedly gang-raping a female student of the school. The suspects, who have been charged with conspiracy and rape, were remanded in police custody to reappear on March 1, 2012. The identities of the suspects and the victim are being withheld by the police because they are minors. According to the Public Affairs Officer of the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service in Accra, Deputy Superintendent of Police Mr Freeman Tettey, six students were alleged to have raped the female student, while a seventh student was present but did not take part in the action. However, out of the seven, two are at large. The incident is said to have occurred in the night of Saturday, February 18,2012 when the students went for prep. The female student is said to have been afraid and shy to inform the authorities about the incident but the authorities acted swiftly when news of the case got to them. The authorities reported the matter at the Larteh Police Station, which in turn informed the Akropong Divisional Command of the Ghana Police Service. Mr Tettey said the police were still investigating the case, but indicated that DOVVSU would counsel the offending boys and provide support for the victim. The Benkum Senior High School, established in 1949, is located on the beautiful Akwapim hills in the Eastern Region of Ghana. The present compound was built in 1974.
