Five soldiers from the 5th Battalion, Burma Camp standing trial at the Adjabeng Magistrate Court for allegedly beating a 35-year-old man to death at Amasaman have been refused bail. The soldiers are Corporal Augustine Nkuah, Lance Corporal Alhassan Afora, Lance Corporal Adu Sarpong and Lance Corporal Aboagye. This was after the prosecutor in the case, Inspector Vicentia Havor, told the presiding magistrate, Patricia Quansah that the duplicate docket had been forwarded to the attorney generals department for advice. Mr. Quansah however asked that the investigator follow up so the case could be continued. The suspects are currently in military custody. The case has therefore been adjourned to March 14, 2012 for hearing. The deceased, Samuel Adotey Addo, was allegedly beaten up by the soldiers at January 17, 2012 when he and two other persons were sent by their Dzaasetse to survey a land. Giving the facts of the case in court, inspector Vincentia Havor said the five soldiers were on duty at Joma on February 17 at about 11:00am when Corporal Augustine Nkuah was informed that some men had been spotted working on his land. Suspect Corporal Nkuah therefore called on the Nii Dzaase who sold the land to him to find out what was happening. The Dzaase in turn sent three persons, including the deceased, to the land. When the messengers got to the scene, there was no sign of encroachment except two masons who were working on a boundary land. The messengers, including the deceased, questioned the masons and while they stood arguing, they saw the soldiers approaching them. Frightened by the soldiers, the messengers took to their heels. The soldiers who did not know they men fled upon seeing them, chased and caught them.
