Family Burnt Alive!

A woman and her two daughters were last Friday, set ablaze by a man believed to have been jilted by his girl-friend in favor of the womans younger brother. The suspect is said to have poured petrol on the three, 36-year-old Rosemond Allotey, 11-year old Attiokor Quartey and seven-year-old Charlotte Quartey who were asleep in their single-room at Mamprobi Soko in Accra. They suffered serious burns and were rushed to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital where they died on Saturday. Rosemonds brother, Tawiah, who lives in Takoradi, is said to be embroiled in a love tussle with the suspect over a young lady alleged to be the suspects ex-girlfriend. The Dansoman Police, who confirmed the incident to the Times on Sunday, said they had not yet established the motive for the arson but have mounted a search for the suspect. Times own investigation, however showed that the suspect had pasted a notice on the wall of Rosemonds room in which he indicated the motive for his action. The note said it was the first warning to the family for the refusal by Tawiah to stay off his girl friend. More attacks would follow if Tawiah did not heed the warning. When the Times visited the scene yesterday afternoon, the plywood ceiling of the room and a portion of the asbestos roofing sheet and had been razed by the fire, destroying the family, wardrobe and home appliances. Other family members have relocated to another house at Mamprobi-Abodwe where sympathizers had been calling to express their condolences. Rebecca Boi, mother of the late Rosemond, who lives in the same house with her, recalled that she was asleep when she heard a sudden blast from her daughters room at about 3:00 AM on Friday. I rushed out to find my daughters room on fire and I shouted for help. People came around and with their help, we managed to bring out Rosemond and her two children all badly burnt. Madam Boi said the three were rushed to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital and where they were on admission until Saturday morning when Rosmond passed away. Her two grand-children also died in the afternoon. According to her, last Fridays fire was the second in the house. About six months ago, their kitchen was similarly set ablaze.
