Benkum Gang-Rape Case: MP Questions Dismissal Of Student Suspects

A Member of Parliament for the Kade constituency, who doubles as a lawyer for one of the nine dismissed student suspects in the Benkum Senior High School gang-rape case, Hon. Ofosu Asamoah, has faulted the school authorities for dismissing his client. Citi News sources say among the dismissed students is a juvenile who was reported to be an accomplice of the alleged rapists. According to Hon. Asamoah, a court order was given that the students returned to school and to report daily to the Guidance and Counseling teacher, but were dismissed upon their return. I was wondering why they should be punished before the case has been resolved, he told Citi News. As it stands now, they are only suspects awaiting trial. He added that the school had also not given the boys a hearing before taking the decision to dismiss them. According to the lawyer, the courts decision to grant the boys bail is partly informed by the arguments that they were entitled to education rights which implied that they could return to school until the case was heard.
