I have followed with keen interest the recent decision by the KNUST authorities to convert the various single sex halls particularly, University Hall(Katanga) to mixed halls. I have tried earnestly to understand, without any success, the reasons and the motives underscoring such a move.
There is no gainsaying the fact that the halls on campus are not adequate to cater for the increasing number of students. Moreover, there is no denying the fact that male population on campus far exceeds the female. However these two key factors have been in existence since Adam and have nothing to do with halls compositions.
As an alumnus of the University and a proud member of the University Hall (Katanga) I would like to urge the authorities to reconsider their decision as mixing the halls plays no role in solving the issues so far put forward.
The reasons underpinning this move, as have so far been made public would, it seems, only weaken the student front. This I would find very unfortunate, if that is the case.
Single sex halls, especially Katanga , have provided a unique avenue to mobilise students to fight for social justice and student wellbeing which have frankly been unmatched by the mixed halls
Student bodies have played various roles in shaping the governance and the democratic dispensation/structure of this country since independence. Weakening their front serves no purpose, other than weakening the spirit, the confidence, the loyalty, the dedication and the commitment of the future leaders of our great country.
The country needs vibrant, confident, bold, vociferous and action oriented youth, as does the university. The university should be proud to have students endowed with these attributes and work with them to shape the future of the university rather than seeking to break their front.
I therefore solemnly stand with KATANGA, CONTINENTAL and all other affected halls in objecting to this change.

Dr SK Nuamah

I was in katana but this sort or argument is ***barred word***. With all these in in out or whatever system and the volume of students. All halls must be mixed.
This act by the VC is a calculated attempt to calm all male HALLS. Visit the three mixed halls and you would relised their ***barred word*** attitudes. It's only KATANGEE's that always fight for the good cause of students. The UNIVERSITY can succeed today but the VC should realised that his position is temporal.
Solution: Alumni of Katanga and all other halls affected, build your own private fraternity houses either on campus or a selected area around town. Select your executives and choose 'only' the best candidates from level 100 each year to continue the tradition. In the 21st Century, it's not about quantity but quality. Dr Nuamah, remember the film 'Social Networking'. Even Mark Zuckerberg one of the founders of Facebook, was dying to be accepted into a fraternity! Think about it Sir, there is more than one way to fight back! The authorities can take the great hall but you can't kill the spirit of Katanga!!!
This is a nos3nsical piece. Are you saying these halls cannot produce vociferous strong individuals who can fight for social justice if they are mixed.Don't act as if you are the only one who has lived in these halls of residence.I am very sure the real reasons for this decision is to bring some modicum of respect and decent behaviour. When we were in the then UST, Katanga was the most obnoxious hall made up of all the hooligans in the university. Any decent person who was sent there quickly adapted and became unruly and tried hard to live up to their questionable reputation. For instance it would take a really stout minded individual to walk around the Hall almost naked during the Hall week if there are females around. Why has the lift in the annex in Katanga never worked? There used to be a time when students will get drunk at the week-ends and just ride up and down till the poor machine seizes up.Let's find something more useful to spend our energies on.I however cannot wrap my mind around changing Africa Hall to a mixed residential one.
What is wrong with the decision, won't you guys marry in future. If you would, then learn how to live with women now, period. University is for learning.
I disagree with the MP for fact that halls need to be male dominated/single before something good or future leaders could be produced.I think in this era of democracy and calling for affirmative policies and so on, it is produce to mix habitations in order to enhance national development and gender balance. Those days of male crowd activities are over. We're in the time of brain power!
Hello fellows in Ghana, please is there any way you guys can mobilize us all katangese afar and near to fight these idioooots ruining our alma mata?
You guys shave nothing to do with your lives except to fight over senseless issues. Empty noise. ***barred word*** students and old students angry over nothing. waste of investment in school
I don't blame the VC but the government. The government is sitting down unconcerned while this national security issue is gradually gaining grounds. government pls be proactive and step in before this gets out of hand for u to use tax payers money to then come in and resolve the issue. Bring the VC n his cohalt nation wreckers to order. Lives n properties will be lost! Anything can happen
So in the light of Conti_katanga saga, the VC of Knust deems it smart to turn around and now change Africa hall (an all female hall) into a mixed hall to support his arguement. It's a pity.
