Anti-graft campaigners and governance experts are kicking against the recent promotion of Deputy Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service, ACP Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo-Danquah, to the position of an acting Director.
The CID Director, COP Bright Oduro, was recently asked to proceed on leave, three months to the actual date of his retirement, January 3, 2018.
ACP Addo-Danquah was quickly appointed to replace him, taking office on Wednesday, October 18, 2017.
COP Bright Oduro himself has complained about unfair treatment and has described his removal as politically motivated.
However, beyond Mr. Oduro’s bitterness, anti-corruption campaigners say ACP Addo-Danquah’s elevation is a slap in the face of the fight against corruption.
ACP Addo-Danquah is embroiled in an unresolved allegation of a possible cover-up and bias in a move to probe of two Presidential Staffers – Abu Jinapor and Francis Asenso-Boakye – in a corruption claim
Vitus Azeem, an anti-corruption campaigner and the Chairman of Tax Justice Coalition, said the decision to promote ACP Addo-Danquah despite the questions that still linger over her connection to the recent corruption investigations, could mar the public’s perception about the government’s stance on corruption.
“That is cause for concern, it’s worrying; especially coming from the President who has pledged to Ghanaians that he is going to fight corruption. It’s definitely a worry,” Vitus Azeem told Accra-based Citi FM.
But Mr. Azeem is not the only person worried by the development.
A political science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Professor Ransford Gyampo, also told Class FM that ACP Addo-Danquah’s elevation lacks tidiness.
He suggests that because the current administration has been accused by some of appointing only close relations, ACP Addo-Danquah’s sudden elevation should not have happened.
ACP Addo-Danquah is rumoured to be related to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, which rumours have been made fertile because of the similarity of their names.
Prof Gyampo said on Wednesday, “This particular appointment is not politically smart for a government that has suffered and continues to suffer a particular accusation. If it's merely acting, then please rethink a different substantive. Political power shouldn't blindfold!”
Meanwhile, former Greater Accra Regional Police Commander, Ayensua Opare Addo, has also condemned the Ghana Police Service for the manner in which COP Bright Oduro was asked to proceed on leave without a fair hearing.
Mr. Oduro had been accused by New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyepong, of empowering land guards in parts of Accra.
He believes these allegations have been the basis for his removal.
Mr Opare Addo, who himself was a victim of the same circumstances, says the service should have considered COP Bright Oduro’s rank and long service to the police administration and allowed him to retire with dignity.

Frankly; I think people are jumping the gun about this lady 's promotion to her current acting rank because so far Ghanaians have not been told what actually happened and what evidence was available to Nana Addo before it was decided that this Bright -Oduro should proceeed on leave ; I am sure Nana Addo may have being presented with enough evidence against this man besides the lady is just in a acting position and therefore there is no guantee that she may be given the job because there are far more competent police officers who are better than this Twiaa Addo -Danquah and even above her in rak ; if people are thinking this was some master minded scheme to get sack Bright -Oduro then it will be toxic mix of NEPOTISM /CORRUPTION/ TRIBALISM but this not the case ; the lady is married to non relative of Nana Addo besides her husband is not from the Akyem region ; so WHAT IS THE BIG DEAL ABOUT THIS ?; the fact that she is called Twiaa Addo -Danquah does not mean anything ; mine honest view is her competence to handle this position because of the A-PLUS episode which exposed her poor judgement and discretion in her which may be worse in the interim besides everybody will be surprised if she is confirmed over other competent police officers or COULD IT BE A MASSIVE SCHEME TO USE THE LADY TO EXPORT A BIG CONSIGMENT OF DRUGS AND USE THIS LADY TO COVER THE PERPETUATORS OF SUCH GRAND SCHEME BY THIS GOVERNMENT ; YOU NEVER KNOW THE MOTIVE OF PEOPLE !!!!!!!; IT HAPPENED UNDER JON MAHAMA !!!!MRS RUBY MAHAMA NOW IN JAIL IN THE UK !!!!!
is she also akyem mafia or from akyem stool land, infact if nana also fail, i think is coup that may restore Ghana. this is the lowest point in the entire politics of nana, i may agree to the ACP addo dankwah that, nana is willing to fight corruption but he may fail, wasnt the same with prof mills, he wanted to fight but the PEOPLE ooh, i think that IGP is the weakest ever, NANA must sit up and order all appointments to come to his desk before approval else the gabby and asante bediatuo may destroy his good will, soon gabby will appoint deputy AG and EC for ghana, the most corrupt ever family in administration, mahama and his gurus mpo na small, i pity the good willing prez and vice, nice people but appointed 90% corrupt and incompetent ministers , ambassadors etc. wish nana learn from kwame nkrumah, his busia and KA kufour if even not rawlings these days, hmmmm Ghana na wooooo ooh
I fully agree to kick against this promotion of ACP Addo-Dankwah though Im a die hard NPP supporter. Pls Mr. President just tread cautiously bcos eyes are watching and it will be very prudent to listen and do whatever the majority of the citizens say but not the few so we can have our smooth sailing as we are on the right path to develop Hhana. Hope you rethink again just as you did to vehicle towing contract. All the best.
