Former President John Dramani Mahama has been badly exposed over claims that he deliberately selected female Muslim students to be sent to Cuba and trained in gynaecology in other to be able to review their fellow Muslim women who have difficulty to consult male gynaecologists when they have to go and consult medically for their reproductive health.
Mr. Mahama, speaking at the Al Sunna Eid Prayers on the occasion of Eid ul Adha at the Efua Sutherland Park in Accra on Sunday August 11, 2019 said;
"About six years ago, when we got scholarships to send some of our children to Cuba to train as Doctors, there was something significant we did. We deliberately decided to source girls from Muslim communities to be part of the training, especially in the area of gyneacology. Our Muslim women who have difficulty when they have to go and consult medically for their reproductive health, prefer that a female doctor looks after them. Our plan was to train female doctors from our Muslim community so that when they come back, we can strategically place them. That will make it possible for our mothers and others who want to consult for their reproductive health to have our sisters who have qualified as doctors to be able to look after them."
In a quick rebuttal to the claim made by Mr. Mahama, the Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, Dr. Anthony Nsiah-Asare has stated that the records available do not buttress Mr. Mahama claims and that there was no student from that batch who was trained in Gynaecology.
"No student was trained in gynaecology from the batch sent to Cuba then as claimed by former President John Mahama. In all, there were 217 General Practitioners and 2 Physiotherapists in that batch," he said.
"One needs to graduate as a General Practitioner before he or she can even specialise. So it is wrong for the former President to allude that they deliberately female students to Cuba to be trained in gynaecology when they had not even be trained as general practitioners" Dr Nsiah Asare added.
"It is the current government which has sent 30 graduates to specialise in Cuba which is a novelty" the Director-General of the Ghana Health Service concluded.
Mr. Mahama's recent comments on Cuban trained Ghanaian doctors comes as a surprise to practitioners in the health profession since the information he put out are palpable falsehoods.
Perhaps, it is just an attempt by Mr. Mahama to neutralise the potential political effects that the deal secured by Vice President Bawumia to send 40 students to Cuba each year to be trained as medical doctors from the Zongos, deprived and inner cities of Ghana.
Vice President Bawumia arranged for this deal when he visited Cuba a few weeks ago. Under this arrangement, 40 Ghanaian students, comprising 20 males and 20 females will be trained.

This is why the NDC does not want free Education so that we don't get the chance to be educated to understand such issues. 1.You train as General practitioner, then you proceed to specialise in what you want to be either a gynecologist or any other. So what are they telling us? NDC omo ada
Why are we still paying huge sums to Cuba to train Ghanaians to become doctors? Why can't the Government build more medical schools in Ghana to meet our needs with the hard dollars we're paying Cuba to train Ghanaians? it doesn't make any economic sense at all. We're boosting the Cuban economy at our expense. The government paid over $400 million for the 225 students batch sent to Cuba during Mahama regime. Why are we repeating the same mistake? All along we were made to believe Cuba was given us scholarships and grants; now, we know we're paying Cuba. Does this make any economic sense at all?
WHERE ARE THE MEN. HOW MANY DOCTORS HAVE YOU TRAINED SINCE YOU WERE APPOINTED. YOU CALL THIS GUY CEO OF NHA
So those who are defending Mahama here, did you really understand the response of Dr. Nsiah or you just wanted to defend Mahama? Eiii understanding simple things has become a problem in this country. Asem nie. Mahama specifically said his administration made a SPECIAL ARRANGEMENT to send FEMALE MUSLIMS to Cuba to be trained specifically as GYNECOLOGISTS. But that is not TRUE ooo ton. Haabah. In the first place only 17 students out of the 220 people are females. More so not all of them are Muslims. Also they all returning after graduating as general medical practitioners with none of the females going to specialize as a gynecologist for now. Before they do they need to choose the programme with another scholarship arrangement. If what Mahama said was anything closer to the truth, then we should have seen majority of the students being females as well as a situation where they will just practice for a while and go back to specialise as gynecologists without another scholarship arrangement or having the choice to change the programme but that is not the situation. I think Mahama was just trying to let the Muslims know that he has done something better than Bawumia for them after learning that a special arrangement has been made by Dr. Bawumia to train doctors specifically from the Muslim community as general practitioners but not necessarily specialists but it backfired.
John the Liar, keep lying. "Ghanaians have short memory".
Please your argument likes common sense and I see it as political rushed rebuttal rather than you remaining as technocrat. From your own words, you said 217 were sent to Cuba, and before anyone can practice gynecology one has to finish GENERAL PRACTICE before so where is your point now? Unless you tell us 217 students sent there are NOT enough ladies among them. Now tells if NO lady will practice after the course. IF NOT BASELESS PROPAGANDA, WHY SHD WE RATHER BELIEVE BAWUMIA WHO IS NOW SENDING STUDENTS THERE AS TRUTHFUL VENTURE?
Ehi Politricians, so they think our foolishness won't end one day. Who does not no that one has to become a general practitioner and serve for some years before he/she can proceed to specialize or these politricians known that we can't read. Ah so are they happy when they lie. Me koraa i can't get it. Yooo continue and lie time will tell.
