For the deteriorating Accra Sports Stadium to gain some fresh life, the government of Ghana has to cough out an estimated GH¢12 million for rehabilitation works.
Starrsportsgh.com understands that this was contained in a report last year by government engineering experts, Architectural and Engineering Services Limited (AESL) on the extent of damage to the edifice.
Youth and Sports Minister Isaac Asiamah on Tuesday announced that works on the edifice is scheduled to begin in June but noted that the costs presented to his office was undergoing auditing.
“Since I was appointed two months ago, I have had consultations with AESL and other consultants. Some have brought some figures with regards to maintaining this stadium and others that we have. We are auditing those figures to make sure that there is value for money.”
“By June, we shall start renovating all our sports infrastructure… It will be done in phases; those critical ones will be addressed… We are starting from the Accra Sports Stadium and we shall make sure that we have a rigorous maintenance regime…” Isaac Asiamah noted.
The edifice was reconstructed at a cost of $31million through a Chinese government loan prior to the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations hosted by Ghana. It has since not seen any rehabilitation works.

WHY IS THE NPP ALWAYS WANT TO PUT THE NDC ON LINE? THE STADIUM WAS NOT WELL TAKEN CARE OF. WE SIT AND WAIT TILL THINGS GETS SO BAD BEFORE WE SPEND MONEY TO FIX IT AND THATS WHERE THE CHOP CHOP COMES IN. IS IT NOT THE BUILDING OF STADIUMS WHICH BROUGHT WAYOME INTO THE PICTURE? IT WAS THE NPP WHO BUILT THE STADIUM AM SURE IF IT WAS THE NDC WHO BUILT IT THERE WILL BE A COMMITEE ON IT BY NOW? NOW THIS STADIUM IS GOING TO BE CLOSED DOWN AND THE ELWAK STADIUM IS NOT IN THE BEST OF SHAPE. WHY DONT THEY PUT ELWAK IN SHAPE BEFORE CLOSING THE ACCRA STADIUM.
@Nana. What do you mean? This estimate was done last year. Why we Ghanaians behave as if there are some special people from somewhere who we are waiting for them to come and develop our country for us.
I bet you 12 million Ghs can build a new stadium instead. Let's open our eyes and stop this criminal actions which kicked ndc out. Npp should do the right thing now or else they should forget 2020 elections.
