Seth Terkper, a former minister for finance under the Mahama administration, has said the country expected more from the vice-president’s address on the economy on Thursday (7 April).
Terkper said Dr Bawumia’s presentation at the TESCON event was an anticlimax.
He said the habit of talking about cost “without talking about the nuisance taxes that should have gone [which is the sacrifice that Ghanaians are making] is unfair to the people of Ghana because ESLA levies have been increased twice.”
Speaking on Asaase Radio Friday (8 April 2022), the former finance minister said, “I’m saying that we’re missing the opportunity to attend to the next crisis through the stabilization as a result of the arithmetic if you like the financial engineering that is currently taking place.”
He added that for the first time, “We have seen less bullishness. The Finance Minister has acknowledged that the country is going through a crisis. The president has also acknowledged that we’re going through a crisis; we heard that from the vice-president but as the head of the economic management team, he was to give us more than even the finance minister or the president…”
“When we had the single spine, the abrupt gas shortage from Nigeria which gave us the power crisis; when we had all of those things, my boss [President Mahama] acknowledged it and I went to Parliament to tell the country what we were going to do with it under his [Mahama’s] direction so that was what we expected,” he added.
“So if the vice-president was mounting the stage, for heaven’s sake [for five years] of managing the economy, you go back to 2016 to do comparisons? We expected an address to the nation, not to a partisan group … but the speech itself should have been more reflective.”
“We expected more and the presentation was just an anticlimax,” he added.

LOOOSER SETH TEPKER, NO ONE IN NDC CAN MUCH DR. BERWUMIAH BOOT TO BOOT, GREAT DELIVERY DR. BERWUMIAH EXCELLENT GREAT LEADER NORTH AMERICAN TRAINED YOU WENT TO GREAT SCHOOLS IN OVERSEAS FROM QUEEN MARY UNIVERSITY WITH DITINCTION TO GREAT CANADIAN UNIVERSITY FRASER INSTITUTE, AND TAUGHT IN AMERICA UNIVERSITY. LET TELL NDC JOHN THIEVE MAHAMA IS NOT EVEN IN YOUR LEAGUE AM REMINDING NDC ARROGANNNT, IGNOOORACE, UNRUULY. PEOPLE NOT TO TRY TO MAKE COMPARISM. MAHAMA WAS COMMUNICATION MAJOR NOTHING TO YOU AS ECONOMIES BACKGROUND. IT WAS SAME FRASER INSTITUTE THAT FORMER CANADIAN GOVERNOR OF BANK OF ENGLAND AND BANK OF CANADA WENT GREAT SCHOOL KARNEY TO BE PRECISED.
Will some of these incompetents give us a break?! You inherit a healthy economy, ran it down and go to IMF for bailout, and you are voted out massively, yet you have the guts to sit and make comments on the same economy? Amazing!
Bawumia may not be that perfect but Seth Terkper is not the right person to criticize, you were the finance minister who sent Ghana to the slaughter i.e. the IMF. At the tail end of 2016 you knew your party was going to lose the elections all you knew was to award a lot of projects which were not budgeted for. Currently we have abandoned projects that cannot be found in any of the budgets you presented, is that how a country's economy is handled? At times these so called politicians speak as if they have no shame. The NPP may be struggling but the NDC is certainly not the alternative, no.
This failed finance minister is making too much noise. Bawumia is not a Finance Minister.
Are you serious Mr Tekper? What did he say yesterday that was a lie? The economy under the NPP is far better than what we experienced under the NDC. Did you listen to the numerous intervention and well thought through policies and programs mentioned? An NPP government will always be better than an NDC government.
