They came in their thousands to South East London on a dank afternoon hoping to witness Newcastle’s first win of the season.
But the 2900 foot soldiers of the Toon Army had to be content with hurling first half abuse at two targets.
First and foremost was owner Mike Ashley whose size and London origins were queried in what is now a well-versed chant. He could not have failed to hear the insult from his seat in the directors’ box. It was his first view of Newcastle since May 2017. Given the level of verbal violence, you could see his thinking. No-one needs that.
