Manasseh Azure Awuni, an investigative journalist, has charged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration to close down schools since some students have started recording COVID-19 cases.
The journalists' call follows some cases being recorded among some students and teachers in some second cycle institutions.
In a series of posts on his Facebook Timeline, Azure Awuni wrote, “Pharaoh, allow the children to go home!
“Some state institutions are shutting down and workers are going home or working from home, but when you question the wisdom of reopening SHS, foot soldiers say COVID-19 is here to stay.”
The government of Ghana’s promise to supply some schools with PPEs ahead of reopening schools seems to have failed and the calls from some school authorities have fallen on deaf ears.
The journalist, meanwhile, cautioned teachers on precautionary measures: “If you’re a teacher, don’t wait for the government to give you a mask before you wear one. Buy and protect yourself and your family, in and out of school,” his post read.
Some second cycle schools in the country have started recording cases of COVID-19 after the government of Ghana directed that students should go back to school as part of measures to ease the COVID-19 restrictions imposed in March.
Government agencies recently confirmed cases
A joint statement from the Ghana Education Service and Ghana Health Service said, “The Ghana Education Service (GES) received reports of suspected cases of COVID-19 from some second cycle institutions including Accra Girls Senior High school. The Ghana Health Service was subsequently notified of the situation. As of 6 July 2020, six (6) students, a teacher and spouse, have been confirmed as positive for COVID-19 in Accra Girls Senior High School.”
The statement added: "The school has put in measures to ensure strict adherence to social distancing and other COVID-19 safety measures, and continuous public education sections for staff, students and parents on COVID-19 as part of steps instituted so far."
But there is still apprehension as the WASSCE begins on 20 July.

Whom does Manasseh seek to call Pharaoh? I believe he could make his point freely without unnecessarily being disrespectful, and if he did, then he might be very scornful. I don't believe our President is a Pharaoh neither is he a tyrant. Astonishingly, Manasseh sounds bitter towards the President and the NPP, for which reasons best known to himself.
It is just sad that people are numbed to reason and common sense because of all the immunity going on in this country. I wish those insulting Manasseh could just pause for a second and put themselves in the shoes of the parents who just lost their son at KNUST SHS. Whilst it is true that anyone can die at any time it stands to reason that this boy's life could have been spared if schools stayed closed. It is true the guy may not have died from Covid-19 but covid-19 definitely played a role in his death in the sense that he was left unattended to because everyone thought he had covid-19 and therefore everybody was afraid to even help him get to hospital. By the time his father got to school to get him to hospital it was perhaps too late to save his life! This is a real life situation which happened to a fellow Ghanaian! So those seeking to make political capital out of Manasseh's exhortation to close schools should take note that this could have been anyone's relative. Your ward may not be in school at the moment but that is irrelevant because the life of every Ghanaian matters and no life should be sacrificed on the altar of politicking! It is simply dangerous and reckless to open schools in Ghana at the moment and you don't even need to be intelligent to know this! Other countries with better systems tried opening schools but quickly closed them down as they learnt the horrible complexity posed by Cod-19 in school settings! So enough of the politics and for once let us face the truth because every single one of us, regardless political persuasion, faces a danger we have never faced before in Covid-19 and needless to add, it is an extremely dangerous enemy that can strike stealthily! A danger to anyone is a danger to all of us. 2 people got infected in March and we are talking about over 22,000 currently!
Manasseh, know that "Freedom of speech is not a licence to be $tepid and f00l". You poured all your hatred on Zoomlion and now, after being unsuccessful with that fight, you have turned your focus on the President. Indeed, no matter how nice the hen dances, the hawk will never be pleased.
See his m0ronic Frafra face with marks like one that has been arrested and released by a tiger. Left to them alone, everything should worsen or grind to a halt so they can have reasons to blame the government. Hope he still "STANDS WITH OTABIL". When it is about other people's fathers, he jumps in with insults and derogatory attacks. When it is those close to him, he fails to even comment. Hypocrites!
His lion marks are worrying.
Shieeee Awuni! Pharoah? ... curb your bitterness. Be wise with labeling people just because you disagree with them!
Manasseh, are you saying parliament should close, ECG, Water company, the banks as well close, how about the overcrowding in the markets? Should life grind to a halt. Cases are growing and so what? The adults who are dying from the virus are going about their business. A few cases in school and so what. Government has bigger problems. you are not happy with free water and financial support. Is it your intention to collapse the country or make the current government unpopular. You do not know what it takes to run a country and your words are so offensive. He might be a Pharaoh to you but not to the rest of the country. Your arrogance is shocking sometimes. I don't even read your articles anymore, they have become meaningless.
