The Global Race Equality Action Trust, a- British-based think tank has congratulated President Barack Obama on the first anniversary of his inauguration as the 44th President of the US.
A statement issued by the trust and copied to the Ghana News Agency in Accra on Thursday, acknowledged the fact President Obama was the first African American to occupy the post, saying: Within 12 short months, the United States and indeed the world have witnessed courageous leadership in the face of significant uncertainty and fast-changing international economic and political environment.
Dr Koku Adomdza, a spokesperson for the trust who signed the statement said:
The election of Barack as the first African-American President of the United States did not only signal the arrival of a new dawn for racial equality and harmony, but it also challenges and interrogates the assumptions, culture, capacity and institutional mindset of other democracies in terms of a thorough and comprehensive commitment to civil and human rights that permeates all aspects of governance.
It said President Obamas election signalled the possibilities and liberating potential and power of genuine inclusion, integration and cohesion by a people determined to exercise ethical judgement, which can elevate talent to the fore for societal benefit.
The statement noted that President Obama rightly embarked on a proactively engaging foreign policy with the United Kingdom, Europe, Asia including China and Africa.
We of the Great Trust commend this engaging embrace but unequivocally advocate the birth of a more equitable and fair global economic order in which the gap between the centre and periphery is completely obliterated, so that the race equality and fundamental human rights of all global citizens can be manifest in our lifetime.
It said President Obama and his administration required non-partisan and international goodwill to deliver a more perfect United States which projects a world of peace, security, justice and fair-play.
