The chairman of the National Cargo Transport Association has called on the government to reconsider the charges of the mandatory towing levy.
According to Alhaji Mohammed Tanko, the charges for penalties is too high for them to afford since vehicles are not deliberately left on the roads.
He raised these concerns at a Road Safety Management Forum organised to educate Ghanaians on the national towing project.
Alhaji Mohammed Tanko said, "we agreed to pay for our cars to be removed on the roads and now the National Road Safety Management is charging us GHC100 for parking after 5 days, that’s too much”.
“We didn’t start this project to make money but to save lives," he added.
The levy was drafted by the erstwhile National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration and passed by the previous Parliament to reduce accidents caused by broken vehicles on the country’s roads.
As part of the law, vehicle owners and motorcyclists will be expected to pay a compulsory annual fee ranging from GHS20 to GHS200 for towing services.
The National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) awarded the contract to the Road Safety Management Limited (RSML), a subsidiary of the JOSPONG Group, owned by businessman Joseph Siaw Agyapong.

EIIII...HMMMMMM.NPP.....NDC SET TRAP FOR YOU. BEWARE OHHHHH....I TALK MY OWN FINISH.
So in this country, all we know is to make laws to make money and nothing else? why must drivers towing levy? for what? mean while, we already have towing laws already and instead of looking at the know and review it to work, we are rather adding up laws just to make someone somewhere rich. Why can't we as people think outside the box a bit.All we know in this country is to take money from people why. Do do not vote for leaders to come and take our monies. We vote for leaders to come and manage our resources for us. In this country, we don't make people responsible but we rather make few people rich out of nothing. Just because those people have political connections. If we want our laws to work and for that matter our country to develop, then we have to hold people responsible and pay for their action and inactions. People dies on our roads because we don't hold anyone responsible for their actions or inactions. If someone knows he will be held for murder or man slaughter for leaving his truck or car on the roadside for causing an accident, that person will do everything possible to remove his truck or car from the roadside. Let make people responsible for their action and inaction period....
