African Union (AU) has sent a delegation to Libya to ascertain the situation on the ground regarding human trafficking and purported slave trade, Acting Director for AU Peace and Security Department, Dr Admore Kambudzi, has revealed.
A video that shows African migrants sold as slaves in Libya sparked a global outcry. It came to light that hundreds of Africans are being auctioned in modern day slave markets for $400 per person as Libya is the main transit hub for illegal immigrants and refugees seeking to reach Europe.
A video published by CNN showed two men stand in the dark negotiating with an auctioneer to buy migrants.
In an interview with the media on Friday, December 1, 2017 Dr Kambudzi revealed that the AU is interested in finding out the reality on the ground in order to address concerns of slave trade.
“Our Chairperson has taken robust measures. He has decided to deploy a delegation of the AU Commission to Libya to establish the fact and make recommendations,” he said.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and other global figures had condemned the slavery, describing it as “gross and scandalous abuses of human rights.”
Others including Member of Parliament for North Tongu and Ranking Member of Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, Samuel Okudzeto-Ablakwa, however, called for a joint military intervention to free the black African slaves being held captive.
Dr Kambudzi, who was not enthused about the development, blamed it partly on the overthrow and murder of former Libyan leader, Muammar Gaddafi.
“We allowed people outside Africa to come and destroy a country that was doing well. Libya used to pay the contributions for so many African countries to the AU. Now it can’t,” he stated.
Six years after the overthrow of Mr Gaddafi, Libya is still a failed state with heavy presence of militants and other violent groups perpetuating heinous crimes.

The French neo-colonialism imperialists are in Africa to continue with the rape and pillaging of our Continent together with it's US and NATO allies. That is why their troops are still in Africa under the guise of fighting terrorism, which is their own creation. The colonial pact and compulsory solidarity system imposed by France on it's 14 former African colonies through which these countries are obliged to put 65% of their foreign currency reserves in the French Treasury, plus another 20% for financial liabilities "suffered" by France during it's colonial rule in those countries is what is sustaining France. This basically means that up to this day, all the 14 African former French-speaking colonies only have access to 15% of their own money. If they need more, they have to borrow their own money from the French at commercial rates. The Bank of France holds more than $20 billion dollars of African reserves in trust. Unbelievably, France makes about $500 billion from Africa annually. In other words, even if these countries were to get better offers elsewhere, they cannot sell or deal with anybody to ensure a fair, halanced and equitable win-win situation, until France says it does not need the resources being sold(Guggisberg economy). French companies are to be considered first in the awards of big ticket govt contracts of Benin, Burkina Faso, Guinea-Bissau, Ivory Coast, Mali, Niger, Senegal, Togo, Cameroon, CAR, Chad, Congo-Brazzaville, Equatorial Guinea and Gabon. Out of the 67 coups that have taken place in 26 African countries in the last 50 years, 61% of the coups have taken place in former French colonies in Africa with full support of the govt of France in order to safeguard the colonial pact, archaic economic order founded on imperialism. Clearly, this has been made possible by very corrupt African leaders who can hardly see beyond their nose, so corrupt and self-centered, they don't care a hoot about the future of their respective countries, the continent and it's people's especially the youth, who today are being sold like goats, modern day slavery, reminiscent of the practices of centuries gone by. So the youth of Africa are demanding a new deal, a new paradigm that addresses their interests and secures their future. This is the moment. It must be delivered. Agenda 2063 is very much alive with no guns on the continent by 2020. Those orchestrated chaos to perpetuate the continued rape of the continent by these neo-colonialists and imperialists with our own, for their self-interest would not address the issues of sustainable development, peace and stability the youth of Africa are demanding and it must be fixed.
well said DR Kambudzi, its high time Africa wake up from a long sleep and take responsibility for its internal affairs. All these problems were not in Libya when Gaddafi was alive. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm the good that men do shall also live after them. RIP Gadafi
