Kofi Adams, the National Organizer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) on Thursday mounted the witness stand in an Accra Circuit Court to testify in a case in which he has allegedly been defrauded by an entertainment promoter of GHȼ 840,000.00.
Mr Adams who was led by Assistant Superintendent of Police ASP Stephen Agyei, narrated that on the 12th of December 2016 after the National Democratic Congress had lost the general elections, the accused approached him and requested the amount to pre-finance a contract he had won to procure tyres for Tarkwa Goldfields.
The National Organiser told Accra Circuit Court that when he gave Mr Arnold Asante the amount, he asked the accused to pay back the money in three weeks’ time but he failed to do so.
Mr Adams said on February 20, this year, Asante who is also a businessman called him on phone and informed him that he was ready to pay the money.
Based on that Mr Adams said he told Asante to transfer GHȼ500,000.00 and GHȼ340,000.00 into two separate accounts but the accused failed to do so.
Prosecution said when Mr Adams contacted Asante, he explained that he transferred the money via online and he did not know why the transaction had not gone through.
He said Mr Adams asked the accused to take him to the Accra office of Tarkwa Goldfields Company to ascertain whether indeed he had contract or not but this did not materialised.
The National Organiser said he personally therefore proceeded to the Goldfields Offices in Tarkwa and it was made known to him that Asante had no contract with them but he however did not mention the contact person.
The first prosecution witness said he therefore made a report at the Criminal Investigations Department.
Answering questions under the cross examination, Mr Adams indicated that Asante had earlier on approached him to assist him to invite former President Jerry John Rawlings to an awards ceremony.
Hearing continues on December 18.
Asante is alleged to have defrauded Mr Adams of GHȼ840,000 with the intent of using the amount to pre-finance tyres supply contract secured from Goldfields Mining Ghana at Tarkwa and pay same but he refused to do so.
Charged with defrauding by false pretences, Asante has pleaded not guilty and is on bail.
