Deputy information minister and government spokesperson finance Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has disclosed that an amount of Ghc120 million has been released to finance the issuance of the National Identity Cards.
It will be recalled that on 15 September 2017, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo launched the new ID card, dubbed the “Ghana Card”. He was issued with the first card on the day of the launch.
The President noted that that the launch of the card “constitutes a practical demonstration of the fulfillment of yet another promise of my party, the New Patriotic Party, made during the 2016 campaign.”
The campaign promise, he recounted, was that “we would modernize and formalize the Ghanaian economy through the establishment of a credible national database, and using the National Identification System (NIS) as the primary identifier, as prescribed by law.”
Since he was issued with the card, no other person has been issued with the same card by the National Identification Authority (NIA).
In an interview on Accra FM on Tuesday, 27 February 2018, Mr Oppong Nkrumah said the NIA will start distributing the cards to all Ghanaians following the release of their budget.
He said: “ An amount of GHS126million has been released to the NIA for the project. Now they are in the position to carry out the remaining work to ensure everybody gets the ID card.
“So now the authority won’t have any excuse not to deliver the cards to the people because we have released the money to them.”

THIS CARD IS KEPPING SOOO LONG!!!!!!!
If no Identification am giving up Ghanaian Nationality. ahhhh how can a Human being living without Identification, shame Ghana and Africa, why wont people be armed robbers and co in a country. illegal migrants in our Nation. they will destroy the Nation and go away.
Is ***barred word*** to start issuing ID without the necessary platform in place, First get the birth and dead offices digitalized, Birth certificates must be issued to every Ghanaian with the id number so u take the birth cert to go and obtain ur ID. By giving out ID's wont solve any problem. We will still fight when it comes to next electoral period when registration starts. Please do the right thing this time.
Great great news for Ghana, now the new era has been dawn. PEOPLE SHOULD BE ADVISED, THE CARD WILL KEEP ALL YOUR GOOD OR BAD DEEDS SO BE READY TO BE RESPONSIBLE PERSON IN THE SOCIETY.
By far, the greatest legacy of the Nana Addo Presidency to Ghana is the National Identification and Addressing project if successfully implemented. It will rope-in every Ghanaian into the tax net and raise the much needed revenue to build our nation beyond aid. This will make Ghana the TRUE STAR OF AFRICA!!! God bless our homeland Ghana
We thank God for his Mercies. The devil is a liar, at long last Ghana our beloved country will have a data base and ID card to capture true Ghanaians and recident permits to immigrants. Ghana ay3 d3 papa! A people with enlightened and intelligent people ruling them move forward with world but a people with primitive, intimidating and uncivil leaders ruling them behave like an*mals from the jungle and go back to the stone age with no development. I thank God for opening my eyes to belong to the civilized group in our country, NPP THE BEST FOR GHANA!
