The government has directed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Attorney General’s (AG) Department to study a request asking for the extradition to and trial of the former President of Gambia, Yahaya Jammeh in Ghana over the killing of some 44 Ghanaians in The Gambia.
The request was made by a campaign group Human Rights Watch and Trial International and is led by an American lawyer, Reed Broody.
Mr Broody is the lawyer for Martin Kyere; the only known survivor out of 56 West Africans - most of them Ghanaian and Nigerian - who were murdered in The Gambia on or around 22 July 2005.
A statement issued and signed by the Minister of Information, Dr Mustapha Abdul-Hamid, said the Foreign Affairs Ministry and the AG’s Department have been tasked to explore the full extent of the legal and diplomatic implications of the request and advise government on the way forward.
“Government wishes to inform the Ghanaian people that it is studying the request by Human Rights Watch and Trial International to ask for the extradition to, and trial of Yahaya Jammeh in Ghana.
“Government has been informed that Human Rights watch in collaboration with Trial International and led by an America lawyer, Reed Brody have unearthed fresh evidence, which they believe ties the former Gambian President, Yahaya Jammeh to the killing of 44 Ghanaians, on or about the 22nd of July 2005,” the statement said.
Dr Hamid noted that the request has both legal and international diplomatic implications; thus, government shall make public its decision in respect of the matter as soon as it receives the reports.
He, therefore, urged the families of those who lost their lives and the Ghanaian population, to exercise restraint as it seeks good counsel on the matter.

Massa we have not finished dealing with the NDC ie Dzifa Ativo wayome opuni double salary and the many others lets focus we dont need Jammeh trial here in gh
The people to blame is the Ghana government under the NDC. They accepted GHC 15,000.00 as compensation for every Ghanaian that died. Is that how we value the lives of Ghanaians? GHC 15,000.00!!! And up till now the government is 'keeping' GHC 280,000.00 in its coffers.
Can the lawyers help us here? Reparations for the death of 44 Ghanaians were received by the state some years back. And what are we asking for again? If Yahya Jammeh could be prosecuted even after the payment of these reparations, so be it but I seriously doubt there could be any prosecution.
Pls, pls pls, you people should stop this Yaya Jamel's problem for Ghana be free, this thing is solved already and dont bring it back again, pls pls pls Mr.President warn your people. I beg Ghana is a peaceful country. God bless.
I don't even know whether Nana is aware that some of his appointees are sabotaging his government. Those with corrupt minds are not happy with Nana setting up the special prosecutor. In fact nothing is working, . The Attorney general and judiciary are non existent. With the the lot of promises and talking not a single corrupt politicians and public officials has been prosecuted for the numerous corrupt allegations NPP made. Besides what the heck is our courts ip to with the unnecessary adjournment of cases for such long periods. Just take a look at the Chinese galamsayer called Asha. What the heck should that case dragged up to date, whilst Ghanaians arrested are prosecuted and jailed within days? Afoko, and JB killers are still being going on. I believe the it is rather the corrupt judges and prosecutors are left off the hook by that Anas something something Eye. Nana please wake up nothing is working. Your people are not working.
Just listen to this ***barred word*** ministry. You are doing practically nothing to prosecute even one of the numerous corrupt politicians and public officials and you are there talking about Yaya Jammah. Ghanaians have lost hope in this ministry. They are good in talking and presumptions. What a heck do judges adjourned cases for months. From the circuit court to the supreme court with an unnecessary adjournment of cases. Why? Nothing is working in the justice system apart mob killing and jailing of pick pockets they claimed to be arm robbers. Ghanaians are disappointed in the Attorney general
