Former Member of Parliament for Ablekuma Central, Theophilus Tetteh Chaie, says it is unnecessary for members of the International Central Gospel Church (ICGC) and other Christians to side with Pastor Mensa Otabil in the bank’s collapse scandal.
“When Otabil’s issue came up, it was all over social media and you will see members of the church saying they stand by him. I laughed over it. When he took that decision, did he consult the members? So why should you say you stand with him? Allow him because the matter is between him and the state,” he said.
Dr Otabil has been the subject of vehement criticism over the last few weeks due to the collapse of Capital Bank, the bank he led as Board chair.
The license of the company together with that of UT Bank was withdrawn by the Bank of Ghana and the assets handed over to GCB Bank in August 2017.
However, a financial autopsy report – Boulders Report – leaked to the media last two weeks and which contained alleged roles of the directors of the collapsed Banks triggered another bout of criticism against the directors, especially the Board chair of Capital Bank.
Dr Otabil, last week, released a statement clarifying his position in the collapse of the Bank.
In what was his first official verbal pronouncement on the matter, after weeks of controversy, Pastor Mensa Otabil told members of his church, Sunday, “God is good.”
The leadership and membership of the ICGC have since pledged their total support and loyalty to their founder.
But speaking on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem Monday, Mr Tetteh Chaie said Pastor Mensah Otabil may have erred in some of the decisions taken under his watch at the bank.
He is of the conviction that Pastor Mensa Otabil should face the consequences of his actions alone.
The NDC Man indicated that the Bank of Ghana has not played its supervisory role in the banking sector effectively.
For him, if the Central Bank had played its role well, the closure of the UT and Capital banks would not have occurred.
A communications director of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Yaw Adomako Baafi who was on the same show said Pastor Mensa Otabil is a pastor, a father, a mentor and an inspiration to many in Ghana and beyond hence there is no problem with such people standing by him.
“Just as anyone will stand by his child or father or mother should they breach the law, that is exactly how members of will stand by him. They are standing with him in these difficult times, through all the hell and high waters and that is the Godly thing to do,” he noted.

NDC are u guys demons. It seems any time a pastor find himself in trouble, NDC become soo happy. That Presby moderator, you were guys were always on His head, Look at the way pastor Otabil has conducted himself through, if today he is down, must guys be jumping, u guys should be sad for him. Even if the law is to take it normal course. If man who sermons help me in choosing a partner is down, do you expect me to be happy. I am not His church member but I can't be happy when a man who has worked so hard, kept his integrity is down. I am not a regular church but I know portions of the Bible, on the cross the were two criminals with Jesus, one pleaded for mercy and ask Jesus to remember him, the was very sarcastic. We politicians we damn sinners, we have been stealing the people's money, if we think people like pastor otabil is one of us we jokers, pastor otabil when go on your kneels, if there was indiscretion on his part, that does not make him one of us. If worst comes to worst and even he is jail, he is not one of us. We deliberately steal the people's money. Pastor otabil when you go down on your knees remember on your prayers.
What's your problem , you claim he's dissipated Ghana's money and I say I stand with him, does that prove you wrong? If not , why are you complaining!!!!! #Istillstandwithotabil#
Theophilus Tetteh Chaie what is your problem? you and the your gang of disoriented jealous barrels without content, whether he stands alone or his church members stand with him, what have you to do with that? I mean what is wrong with you people? I can't understand you. fact is no matter what you spill out the man Dr. Otabil is not your match. Just continue to make your noise very soon you will know where you belong.
Rubbiiissh! You stood and still stand with a man who dissipated our National resources with abandonement and you are asking others not to stand with someone whose contribution to this Nation is not equalled by the contribution of people to whom National resources were given to govern. Has anyone found him to have stolen or used any dubious means to enrich himself?
it is not about what your views are; it is about what happened and your role in it. Good pastors must account to the people they shepherd!
The man can stand alone. He has stood alone all these years. Ask which Christian group icgc belong to in this country. Not IPCC, not Christian council, not NCN etc, n which national or pastoral gathering have u seen him attend? STANDING ALONE
He stands ALONE in front of GOD!! He can do and say all he wants!!! GOD will expose him in due course!!
