President Nana Akufo-Addo says the late former United Nations Secretary-General, Kofi Busumuru Annan, gave him sensitive advice when he took over as President of Ghana.
Nana Akufo-Addo said he appreciated the advice from the late diplomat.
“He gave me sensitive, deeply appreciated advice when I became President of the Republic,” Akufo-Addo said when he read his tribute at Kofi Annan’s burial service held at the Accra International Conference Centre on Thursday.
He said the last time he saw Mr. Annan was in March 2018, when the former international diplomat came to “inform me, much to my discomfiture, that he could no longer continue to serve as Chancellor of Ghana’s premier university, the University of Ghana, Legon, since he had served the two terms permitted by the statutes of the university.”
“I bemoaned my ill-luck, even though, as life would have it, the university has found in Mary Chinery-Hesse, his old and trusted friend, a worthy successor,” he said.
President Akufo-Addo added that Mr. Annan was enthused about his Ghana Beyond Aid agenda.
“Kofi Annan was an ardent believer in the capacity of the Ghanaian and African to chart his or her own course on to the path of progress and prosperity. He found the vision of a Ghana Beyond Aid, indeed of an African Beyond Aid, very appealing. Undoubtedly, he excelled in the various undertakings of his life, leaving in his trail most pleasant memories. His was a life well-lived,” President Akufo-Addo added.
Kofi Annan died on August 18, 2018 in Switzerland at the age of 80 after a short illness.
Several dignitaries including world leaders and the current UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, are currently at the funeral service.

Kwaku, you see everything as ndc that's why you are in that sorrowful state. Get a life. fir life is not by sitting behind a computer everyday and posting st*pid arguments for the ndc. In every civilized world policies are what a government put in place for the people to build on. in any case, what policy did your ndc bring for you and your other ndc footsoldiers to build on? This government has thought it wise to give education first, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah thought it wise to give education first hence no child left behind policy was rolled over for every child to go to school, he didn't build classrooms before asking every child but they ran on shift, one shift starts in the morning to 12.30 pm and the second shift starts 1'oclock to 4.30 pm each for 2 weeks, that is morning for 2 weeks and afternoon for 2 weeks and nobody complained, not even the opposition! which means even those days politicians were responsible than today, but I don't blame today's because Ghanaians in this generation we choose idi*ts who are broke but with loud mouth and who can insult to go to parliament while those days they chose responsible, hardworking people to parliament. People with loud mouth who can insult were only for propaganda office but not for parliament or ministerial positions. Hence every idi*t call himself a politician and come to social media to insult instead of finding something to use his/her hands to do. Akufo Addo has brought planting for food and jobs it is up to you to find a land and start to use your hands for rich people in the civilized world are farmers, it can be land farming, poultry, livestock or whatever but lazy ndc footsoldier think freebies means a government is doing good, you will stay in your poverty till thy kingdom come! Ghana has vast land go and work! lazy fo*00l! planting for food and jobs was called Brigade who were working on state farms in Osagyefo's time, everything Nana Addo is doing was a plan handed to him in a booklet by Osagyefo when Nana was about 12 years old. There is nothing you in the ndc will do or say that will change the course of this country. Just less than 2 years in opposition and you are crying, you ain't seen nothing yet! you have 50 years to be in opposition!
