The Ministry of Health has refuted claims by some unemployed nurses that President Akufo-Addo lied when he said the government had granted financial clearance for the employment of over 14,000 graduate nurses during his presentation of the State of the Nation Address.
The Ministry in a statement said it had indeed received clearance from the Ministry of Finance to recruit over 14,000 graduate nurses in April 2019.
The President of the Coalition of Allied Health Professionals, Bright Bell, in a Citi News interview following the president’s address said nurses who graduated in 2016 have still not been posted.
He expressed regret at President Akufo-Addo’s announcement that the government was working to grant financial clearance to 2017 and 2018 graduate nurses when 2016 graduates were yet to be recruited.
“We have completed in 2016 and 2017 and we are still at home. So if they talk about arrangements for our junior colleagues to be cleared, then we are at a loss because we are still waiting for our clearance. I think that facts must be laid bare so that we can all understand the situation,” Bright Bell said.
Bright Bell’s reaction was supported by other nursing groups who said they were yet to be employed.
But the Health Ministry in its press statement said President Akufo-Addo did not err in his statement and that the names of those recruited can be verified.
“[The Health Ministry] wishes to reiterate the President’s statement that it has received financial clearance from the Ministry of Finance to employ 14,254 nurse assistants (clinical and preventive) from government nursing training institutions and the names have been verified by the Nursing and Midwifery Council,” the statement said.
The statement issued by the Ministry, and signed by Nana Kwabena Adjei-Mensah, the Chief Director of the Ministry, indicated that postings to the various health agencies were ongoing and nurses can contact the ministry for updates on the process.

@Lion you should be grateful that we have a leader like Nana Addo, who cares for the Nurses and the people of Ghana and has decided to use our Taxes on a good deeds like paying of Nurses Allowances and employing the youth. We did have a leader like John Mahama who did prefer to used our taxes on Branding Buses, paying of one coconut pot in Brazil for 200 Dollars, Sharing of Cars and houses to people like Aku Donko, John Dumelo, Tracy Boagye, etc.
Lion you should also accept the fact that you voted for someone who came and took a decision the affected you negatively so if someone is taking a step in the right direction to correct the past he needs to be praise and stop being ungrateful
You are 100% right when you say this Nurses are ingrate and ungrateful beings. I suspect the NDC ungrateful members in them to be the people making noise and 1ying to Ghanaians.
Zinabu, like seriously? You think if a leader we've voted for give some of our own taxes to nurses all of us should go down on our knees to worship him? The man has been given everything that makes him comfortable, why shouldn't the tax payers also have the right to demand whatever is due them? Zinabu! We voted for the president to serve us so we have the right to question whatever he does. This is not chieftaincy this is democracy. Leaders must be made responsible and accountable. Why should we show appreciation for something we deserve from a man who we have made too comfortable?
Who is right then? Nana said nurses started work in February while clearance is for April so who is a liar?
You see how ungrateful these trainees can be. Somebody mismanaged the economy, went to IMF for policy credibility and embargo was put on employment. Now Nana Addo came introduced your allowances and started employing all these back locks of nursing trainees from far back as 2014. Instead of you to praise him look at what you're spewing. Ungrateful nursing trainees indeed.
